Country School Day

Teachers

We cordially invite you and your students to experience a day traveling back in time for a Country School Day set in the late 1800s. Students will discover what life was like through era-appropriate school lessons in an original one-room schoolhouse and a second session exploring activities in or near the other museum buildings on the grounds of the Swiss Historical Village. The curriculum meets Wisconsin State Standards for Social Studies.

Daily event times  9:00 – 2:00 pm 

(includes the two sessions described above and a lunch/recess break)

Cost: $5.00 per student to defray the cost of staffing and project supplies. Teachers and chaperones are admitted to the museum free of charge.  

Participants are encouraged to dress for the occasion in “country school attire” and bring a cold lunch, representing food items available in the late 1800s. This approach will help children to fully immerse themselves into the day’s experience. Read our Frequently Asked Questions for more detailed information.

"Country School Day" provides rich learning opportunities for all types of learners. Students are exposed to a variety of activities that tap into their imagination with simulations that transport them back into time.
Careful planning of every aspect of the students' day is evident in the multi-sensory activities that students get to experience. Plus the setting itself is so naturalistic--such authenticity contributes to deeper student learning.
Students loved listening to the read aloud book and enjoyed a sweet treat. After this activity, a student asked, "Is this the same recipe from the Laura Ingalls Wilder book?".
The Traveling Trunk sorting activity was well thought out and made the students think and reflect on what would be necessary to bring to America when immigrating.
