Are you searching for ancestors among the Swiss settlers of New Glarus and their descendants? You may want to start your research online by looking through the Familien Buchs (family registers). The original images contained in the Familien Buchs are the records of births, confirmations, marriages and deaths maintained by the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus. Bob Elmer’s Family History Notes, published between 2005 and 2024. A searchable index of names found in the newsletters is available.

Glarus Family Tree is a website established and maintained by Patrick Wild. Wild’s website is the most comprehensive collection of genealogy resources associated with Canton Glarus, Switzerland as well as Glarner emigrants from the 19th to early 20th centuries. In addition the site offers many overviews of Glarner history.

The New Glarus Public Library website offers a variety of other resources on its Local History Page.

The Green County Genealogy Society operates a genealogy research center at the Monroe Public Library. Its holdings are related to Green County with Rock and Lafayette Counties also represented in its collections. A large collection of newspaper clippings which includes births, marriages and obituaries is also available.

If you prefer hands-on research, members of the New Glarus Historical Society have transferred the information from the Familien Buchs to index cards, arranged alphabetically. This information is available at the museum and can be accessed by appointment, during times that the museum is open to visitors.
